For international students planning to study at a university in Türkiye, understanding the approximate periods for university applications, admissions, registration and scholarships can help them plan ahead and avoid missing important opportunities.

Important note: The dates below provide a general and approximate timeline. Application deadlines, required documents, quotas and admission requirements may vary depending on the university, department and level of study. Applicants should always check the latest announcements published by their university of choice.

1. Fall Semester: The Main Admission Period

The fall semester, which usually begins in September or October, is the main period when new students start their university studies in Türkiye.

Associate and Bachelor’s Degree Programs

Many universities begin accepting applications from international students during the first months of the year, while some universities continue accepting applications through the summer and, in some cases, until September.

In general:

  • January–March: Researching universities, programs and admission requirements
  • March–June: An important application period for many universities
  • June–August: Continued applications and announcement of admission results at many universities
  • August–September: Final registration, completion of documents and preparation for the academic year

However, some universities may open applications earlier or accept applications until later dates. Therefore, the application calendar of each university should be checked separately.

2. Master’s and PhD Programs

Admission calendars for master’s and PhD programs are generally more flexible.

For fall admission, many universities accept applications approximately between April and July, while some may continue accepting applications through the summer or even into the fall.

Some universities and programs also admit students for the spring semester. In such cases, applications may generally open between October and January or February.

Therefore, for master’s and PhD programs, both fall and, at some universities and in certain programs, spring admission opportunities may be available.

3. When Is the Best Time to Apply?

Students planning to study in Türkiye are advised not to wait until the final application deadline.

For fall admission, it is recommended to begin researching universities and programs and preparing the required documents in January and February, and to actively follow and submit applications during March–June.

Some universities may fill their available quotas before the official final deadline.

Applying early can therefore provide students with more options when choosing a university and program.

4. Important Period for Türkiye Scholarships

The application period for the government-funded Türkiye Scholarships is different from direct university applications.

Türkiye Scholarships offers opportunities for different levels of study, including associate, bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programs. The general application period is usually held during January and February.

For example, the official application period for 2026 was announced as 10 January–20 February.

Students planning to apply for Türkiye Scholarships are therefore advised to begin preparing their documents during November and December and not to miss the January–February application period.

Academic diplomas and transcripts, required translations, CVs, motivation letters and other necessary documents should preferably be prepared before the application period begins.

Scholarships offered directly by universities, foundations and other institutions may have different application periods and requirements.

5. Spring Admission for Associate and Bachelor’s Programs

At many universities, new students are mainly admitted to associate and bachelor’s programs for the fall semester. Therefore, students should not assume that spring admission will be available.

However, this is not an absolute rule for all universities and programs. Applicants should check the current announcements of the relevant university and department.

Spring admission opportunities are generally more common in certain master’s and PhD programs.

6. Student Residence Permit

International students studying in Türkiye in associate, bachelor’s, master’s or PhD programs may apply for a student residence permit (Öğrenci İkamet İzni) if they meet the relevant legal requirements.

Applications for student residence permits are submitted through the official e-İkamet system. Students are required to provide documents related to their education, address and other required information.

Important: There is no general official rule stating that student residence permit applications are prohibited every year from mid-April until 10 July. Residence procedures should therefore be followed according to the student’s individual residence status, university registration date and the current regulations of the Presidency of Migration Management.

7. Approximate Application Timeline

Researching universities and programs November–February
Preparing required documents December–March
Türkiye Scholarships applications Usually January–February
Applications to many universities for fall admission February–July
Continued applications at some universities July–September
Final registration for the fall semester Usually August–September
