Long-Term Residence Permit in Türkiye
A long-term residence permit is a type of residence permit granted to foreign nationals who wish to reside in Türkiye for an extended period. This permit allows foreigners to benefit from many of the rights granted to Turkish citizens. However, certain rights and obligations may still be subject to limitations.
Rights:
- Benefiting from rights granted to Turkish citizens, except for compulsory military service
- Right to reside indefinitely in Türkiye
- Access to education, healthcare, and other public services within the framework of relevant legislation
Limitations:
- No right to vote or be elected
- Restrictions on employment in public service positions
- Certain rights may be limited under specific laws
Grounds for Cancellation:
A long-term residence permit may be revoked in the following cases:
- If the holder poses a serious threat to public order or public security
- If the holder stays outside Türkiye for an extended uninterrupted period
Other Considerations:
- A long-term residence permit is issued for an indefinite period and does not require renewal.
- If revoked, a new application must be submitted to obtain the permit again.
Requirements for a Long-Term Residence Permit:
- Having resided in Türkiye continuously for at least 8 years
- Having sufficient and stable financial resources to support oneself and, if applicable, dependents
- Having valid health insurance
- Not posing a threat to public order or public security
Access to Healthcare:
Access to public healthcare services depends on being covered under the General Health Insurance system (SGK). A long-term residence permit alone does not grant automatic entitlement to healthcare services.
Access to Education:
Holders of a long-term residence permit may enroll their children in schools and universities in Türkiye.
Application Process and Required Documents:
Applications are submitted to the Directorate of Migration Management. Required documents typically include a valid passport, health insurance, proof of financial means, and documentation of previous residence.
Possibility of Acquiring Turkish Citizenship:
A long-term residence permit does not grant a direct right to Turkish citizenship. However, the period of legal residence in Türkiye may be taken into account in citizenship applications.
