A roundtable meeting with Tomas Niklasson, the European Union's Special Envoy for Afghanistan, and the accompanying delegation was held on the 7th of February at the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM). The meeting was held in the format of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House). Academics, analysts and some civil society representatives attended. Afghanistan's socioeconomic and political situation, current and future problems in Afghanistan, and what the EU and Turkey can do for the welfare of Afghanistan and Afghans in other countries were discussed. Founder and President of the Afghan Refugee Solidarity Association, Zakira Hekmat, attended the meeting, and Hekmat drew attention to the restriction of the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. "There have been very good developments for women in the last 20 years in Afghanistan. We had female ministers and deputies. But with the coming of the Taliban Government, 24 bans were introduced in 1.5 years and all of the bans were about women. Moreover, the Taliban did not keep any of their promises. and banned women's right to education, including primary education." Hekmat said. Hekmat also emphasized that they expect the European Union to follow a more determined stance on these issues and that they should advocate especially for minorities, Afghan women and girls.
